When to replace one’s thermostat

My husband is an HVAC technician so our house is always up-to-date and very on top of the maintenance of our HVAC system and thermostat. My best friend just called me recently in regards to her thermostat. I pretty much should be an HVAC technician because all the problems that I hear from my husband about other people’s HVAC systems, I know all about. Therefore when it comes to our friends and family we will give free HVAC advice if they call us. My friend called me and asked when she should replace her thermostat. I asked her how old her HVAC system was and she said that it’s about 10 to 15 years old. I told her that if a HVAC system is that old that also means that her thermostat is around that age as well. I even asked her what her thermostat looked like. There are thermostats that are very outdated that still use the dial to control the temperature in one’s home. She said that she did have a dial installed on the wall and I told her that she should replace it and get a digital thermostat. I told her that a newer thermostat model can increase the unit’s efficiency and also monitor the temperatures within her home. There are also programming operations that allow you to program your home’s temperature to fit your schedule. She didn’t realize that that was an option in digital thermostat models. I told her to replace her thermostat quickly so she could see the difference in her energy bill.
