When my daughter called in a panic the other day, I thought “what happened this time?”.
I can tell you that these types of calls are a normal occurance ever since she moved out.
We thought we had prepared her for independent life, however, this apparently was not the case. She gets upset over every little thing that happens and most things are just normal everyday occurrences. At least this time it was a true issue. She had gotten home from work to find her house freezing. I went over a quick checklist on the phone, such as, did you check the thermostat, is the power on, etc. When all of this checked out, my husband said he would head over and check it out. When he got to her apartment the temperature in the place was down to fifty degrees. He was worried because it was only in the mid-twenties outside and if he wasn’t able to get the heat going she would have to pack up her dogs and head to our house for the night. He doesn’t really like the dogs so that didn’t seem like something he wanted to happen. He checked all the connections to make sure there wasn’t an issue. He then headed outside to see if the vent was blocked. Each unit has its own HVAC appliance that is vented outside. Since she in on the main floor it would be possible for leaves and other debris to blow up against the vent. Sure enough, the vent was blocked and the system had shut off for lack of airflow. He thought he had told her to check the vent from time to time when she moved in, but, at least it was an easy fix and her heat came back on once the vent was cleared.
